Fall
2007 Moab ride:
Moab Riders: We plan on traveling to Moab on Thursday (10/4). Ride days are
Friday (10/5), Saturday (10/6), and Sunday (10/7). We’ll return home on Monday
(10/8).
Camping Area:
I plan on camping in one of the camp sites along the Sand Flats Road I hope to
get there early enough on Thursday to stake out several areas for those of us
that will be camping. Please let me know if you plan on coming and if you are
going to camp with us, stay in town, or camp somewhere else. Camping at the
Sand Flats
Recreation Area costs $10 per night and covers the use fee. If you don’t
camp there, the user fee is $5 for 3 days. I have a travel trailer, a burgundy
02 Chevy pickup, and a KTM 300 EXC. I’ll also have the NCTR sign out.
Directions:
Go west on I-70, turn south on Hwy191 and go into Moab. Turn left (East) on
300south (Utah streets are named for their hundred block, 300south, 1800west,
etc) then right (South) on 400 east, then left (East) on Mill Creek Drive. Mill
Creek turns into Sand Flats Road and takes you up to the
Sand
Flats Recreation Area.
Weather:
Fall is a great time for riding, hiking, or just plain old sight-seeing in Moab.
The weather is pleasant with typical day time temperatures in the 70s or 80s.
The nights are cool, typically in 40s or 50s. It doesn’t rain often in Moab, but
it does happen, so come prepared just in case.
Riding conditions:
There is lots of sand and slick rock (By-the-way, slick rock is not slick and it
gives great traction for rubber tired vehicles). The trails/roads are mostly
moderately difficult jeeps roads with lots of ledges and benches interspersed to
make for overall advanced rides. If you have questions about the difficulty,
give me a call and I can give more detail. Colorado OHV stickers or license
plates will keep you legal on the trails.
Ride Information:
Rider meetings at 8:30 AM at my camp site, Rides start at 9:00 AM (Please note
this is ˝ hour earlier than normal as I would like to have the option of doing
more trail or some other activity latter in the day). We will ride to the trail
heads and or ride short sections of highway to connect trails, so being street
legal is necessary. If you are not street legal, you will need to meet us at the
trail head and be ready to ride once we get there. Also, there may be some
blacktop riding involved when returning to the trail head. This is a little
different than what we have done in the past, but it give us lots of options and
speeds things up.
The rides below are suggested. However, if the group want to do something else,
I’m flexible.
Friday – Poison Spider Mesa, Golden Spike, Gold Bar Rim, Gemini Bridges, and
Long Canyon; then travel back to camp via the Potash Road for a short break;
then a short ride on Hell’s Revenge, Slick Rock, or Fins-N-Things.
Saturday – Moab Rim and Amasa; then travel back to camp for a short break; then
a short ride on Hell’s Revenge, Slick Rock, or Fins-N-Things.
Sunday – Either Kane Creek – Behind the Rocks – Prichett Canyon; OR Soverign
Trail – Monitor/Merrimac – Tusher Canyon – Bartlett’s Slick Rock – Bartlett’s
wash (for this latter ride it would be better if we trailered/trucked the bikes
out to the trail head).
Ride Difficulty:
In light of recent discussion, I would rate all these rides as difficult or
advanced.
Ride miles are around 60 to 70 each day, maybe more. I’ll try to get better
estimates latter.
